As with ATEX certification, IECEx certification is not limited to verifying product compliance. It also requires the manufacturer's quality management system to be certified according to specific requirements that are more stringent than those of ISO 9001 alone.
It is important to emphasize that, although this quality management system assessment is a mandatory requirement within the IECEx Scheme (the global voluntary certification system), under ATEX (the mandatory European certification system) a product certificate may be issued before the quality management system certification has been obtained and may remain valid thereafter. For this reason, it is always good practice to verify that the manufacturer also holds the specific quality management system certification for the production of Ex equipment.
This additional certification ensures that the manufacturer is capable of consistently maintaining, over time, the Ex safety characteristics declared and certified for its products through controlled and continuously monitored manufacturing processes.
Once obtained, the manufacturer is also subject to periodic surveillance audits carried out by the certification body to verify the ongoing compliance with the applicable Ex requirements. This continuous oversight provides customers with the assurance that every product manufactured maintains the same quality and safety standards as the sample originally certified.
Within the IECEx certification system, manufacturers must comply with the requirements of the IECEx 02 Scheme by demonstrating that their organization conforms to ISO/IEC 80079-34:2018, the international standard specifying quality management system requirements for the design and manufacture of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Motive achieved this important milestone in June 2026, completing the fundamental prerequisite for the forthcoming IECEx certification of its entire range of three-phase motors and mechanical gearboxes.
